So Which One Is the Best?
As you can now appreciate, the technologies and methods behind music recommendation are diverse and complex. A few rely on the collaboration of a musical audience, others on editorial expertise, and some on personalized music profiles. In each case, the interfaces have been very different in form, though their functions are all designed to garner the same results: They want you to visit their sites (and not the other guy's) to receive recommendations on new music.
And this couldn't come at a more poignant time. Music recommendation technologies are powerful for sites that intend to sell CDs or MP3s but are also invaluable for the directionless Napster user who is looking to discover new bands. Each of these sites strive to be the best in its field, each has its merits, and each its shortcomings. Try them all and find which matches you and your aural tastes best.
With that, I leave you to your own devices. Until next week, keep your ear to the floor, discover some new music, and listen for the lowdown.
